The Mediterranean Diet

Yesterday morning, while I was getting ready for work, I had the Today Show on in the background (per usual) and a health segment came on about the Mediterranean Diet. I'm always interested in food and health so I stopped what I was doing to listen to the segment.

"The Mediterranean diet is a modern nutritional recommendation inspired by the traditional dietary patterns of southern Italy, Greece and Spain. The principal aspects of this diet include proportionally high consumption of olive oil, legumes, unrefined cereal, fruits & vegetables, moderate to high consumption of fish, moderate consumption of dairy products (mostly as cheese and yogurt), moderate wine consumption, and low consumption of meat and meat products. A 10-year study found that adherence to a Mediterranean diet and healthful lifestyle was associated with more than a 50% lowering of early death rates. A 5-year study of 7,447 people reported that the Mediterranean diet reduced the risk of heart disease in people at high risk by "about 30 percent".

I mean it makes sense...the majority of the people that live in those countries live long and have few health problems...unlike us Americans who love our caveman size steaks and fast food! I can say that BS and I are really good when it comes to food choice but you can always do better! For us, we could probably cut down on our red meat consumption! This "diet" is SO simple to integrate into your life- the food that you are encouraged to eat it clean, simple, delicious and the health benefits are endless! I'm on board- what about you?
